my guess is it has a hydraulic clutch and its the fluid container for it,my st1100 has the same thing hope it helps

I live near this road and know how good it is .I know the cops over police it but its dun for safety reasons as my dad was a cop and went to an accident just after the cat were a young rider on a powerful bike came round the bend and decapitated him self when he ran into the back end of a car.I know 50 is a bit of a killjoy but lets all enjoy this road in safety.
